FHB16 Hydraulic Breaker for 12–20 Ton Excavators – SUPERIOR RELIABILITY

FRD’s fifth-generation rock breaking hammer, with the Quick Switch Valve, is designed for use on excavators in the 12- to 20-ton range.

The FRD FHB16 is a hydraulic breaker for excavators in the 12 to 20 U.S. ton class, with 16 tons as the optimal carrier weight. It weighs 2,963 lb (1,347 kg), runs on 26.4 to 40.9 GPM at 2,320 to 2,610 psi, and delivers 420 to 620 blows per minute through 4.72 in (120 mm) working steel. It is the smallest FHB Series model with the Quick Switch Valve as standard, and it has a solid body with no thru-bolts.

The FHB16 Qtv is ideal for roads, bridges, rock, utility applications, and in quarries. Incorporating the latest in design technology, the FHB16 Qtv hammer improves day-to-day performance, offering less maintenance and downtime, smoother operation, superior strength and the highest level of reliability.

What is new in the FHB16?

The FHB16 Qtv offers improved durability, with features that include a square, mono-block body design for superior strength. A patent pending dust prevention system incorporates grooves to trap contaminates on the upstroke and expel them on the piston downstroke, while a cushion ring acts as a secondary trap. This improves the life of the piston, bushings and working steel.

Our unique design gives us an excellent power to weight ratio for lower maintenance and increased performance. This solid body concept eliminates thru-bolts which has reduced the breaker weight but does not affect our impact energy. This makes for much better control for the operator, less wear and tear on the excavator and reduced fuel costs.

Operators appreciate performance features that include a new valve design to reduce hydraulic fluid temperatures. A redesigned piston enhances surface contact to working steel, while a larger bushing surface keeps it aligned for greater impact. A replaceable cylinder liner increases tool life and reduces repair downtime.

The FHB16 Qtv is also designed to accommodate automatic lubrication systems for quick daily maintenance. Excavators equipped with quick couplers can take advantage of our Floating Top-Mount Boss mounting system. This incorporates standard mounting hardware while meeting “OEM Pin Centers” for specific carrier mounting eliminating the need for specific OEM top caps.

The FHB16 ships in FRD’s Qtv cradle, a low-noise protective housing that accepts a wide range of top caps. The FHB Series builds on FRD’s Fx Series and adds the Quick Switch Valve, updated stop pins and rod pins, a three-point dust intake prevention system, and a valve design that lowers hydraulic oil temperature.

All hammers come complete with our exclusive Pro-Pak for ease of installation. The Pro-Pak includes hose whips, mounting hardware, standard working steel and tool kit with operating manual at no additional charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Quick Switch Valve (QSV) is the FHB16’s stroke adjuster. The operator turns the valve with a tool until its groove lines up with one of three letters.

The FHB16 is sized for carriers from 12 to 20 U.S. tons, with 16 tons as the optimal carrier weight. Confirm that the carrier’s auxiliary flow and pressure fall within the FHB16’s range before mounting.
The FHB16 weighs 2,963 lb (1,347 kg) and is 100 in (2,540 mm) long. Both figures include the standard working steel and universal top cap, less mounting pins and bushings.
The FHB16 accepts 26.4 to 40.9 GPM (100 to 155 LPM) of oil flow at 2,320 to 2,610 psi (160 to 180 bar). Hydraulic input power is 46.5 kW.
The FHB16 delivers an adjustable 420 to 620 blows per minute. It uses 4.72 in (120 mm) diameter working steel.
The Quick Switch Valve (QSV) is the FHB16’s stroke adjuster and comes standard. Turning the valve with a tool selects one of three settings: L for long stroke, S for short stroke, and A for long stroke with anti-dry-fire protection.
No. The Smart Stroke System, which changes stroke length automatically by sensing piston position, is an option on the FHB27 through FHB45 only. The FHB16 sets stroke manually with the Quick Switch Valve.
No. The FHB16 uses a solid body design that eliminates thru-bolts, so there are none to torque, break or replace.

Choosing the Right Hydraulic Breaker

When operated properly, breakers efficiently and effectively break up concrete and shatter rock. If not operated properly or not sized correctly for the job, the attachment can fail unexpectedly and waste precious time on a job site, or even suffer a reduced lifespan.
